nature and nurture with grounding

Grounding or earthing is all about taking little steps that can make a big difference in your life no matter where you live, work or play. The earth’s gifts abound everywhere, buoying spirits and benefitting bodies by nature’s sheer presence alone. In the past few decades a number of well-researched books by doctors and scientists have made the connection between nature and human health. Recently published new ones are springing up on the shelves at a fast clip. Included in many are the positive effects that just looking at nature can have on depression, immunity, vitality, productivity, creativity, memory and even cognitive functions.

In their book, Your Brain on Nature: The Science of Nature’s Influence on Your Health, Happiness and Vitality Eve Selhub, MD and Alan Logan MD relays that spending just 20 minutes in a vegetation-rich area of nature improves emotional strength, perspective and vitality. A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that people who lived within a half mile of a green space experienced less anxiety and depression than those living farther away. That’s sure sounds like an appealing alternative to taking medications — at least worth a try. And it’s free.

Then there are two studies by Roger Ulrich of the University of Delaware worth citing. His findings reveal that just viewing nature can encourage healing and lowers the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood by 13 percent. A must read are Richard Louv’s works. He expounds on the topic and coined “Nature Deficiency Syndrome.” This phrase says it all.

The healing effects of a natural view are also increasingly being understood in stressful environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, and military sites as well as for people who work in windowless offices – that’s lots of us. Studies reveal that nature is an effective means of relieving stress and improving overall wellbeing. The Japanese call the grounding effect of looking at trees shinrin-yoku, which means “forest bathing”. They actually prescribe this for patients as part of medical care.

Newly published books, including Deepak Chopra and Kimberly Snyder’s book Radical Beauty makes the connection between nature and being grounded as one of their six core pillars and The Nature Fix, by Florence Williams, just now hitting bookstores, shares rich data and findings supporting the outstanding wellness benefits of the outdoors.

It goes without saying that living in the suburbs, near a park or close to the water offers endless opportunities to restore yourself. But even if home is in a concrete jungle or you can’t get outdoors easily from your high-rise office perches in the city, there are steps you can take to get grounded and partake in nature. One of the best things about grounding is that it is accessible almost anywhere, at any place and at any time. Sounds like early tree huggers knew a thing or two!

Earthing with pluggz shoes

We first published this blog post in early 2013 but we think it bares repeating. Earthing or grounding as it is commonly known is starting to come to into its own. More and more people are learning about the theraputic effects of grounding or earthing.

According to James Oschman PhD., a recognized expert in the area of energy medicine and its scientific basis, “People have known for a long time that walking barefoot feels good.” We all can attest to that. But walking around barefoot not only feels good it has the added bonus of being beneficial for our bodies, too! How, you ask? Well, because of earthing, also called grounding! But what is earthing. In the simplest of terms, earthing means grounding your body to the Earth.  So what does this mean?

Although the concept of earthing has been around since the ‘60s, earthing is still viewed as a relatively new health discovery according to Clint Ober, a pioneer in the field who coined the term.  Earthing or grounding, creates an electrical connection from the earth to the human body when a person makes direct contact with the ground. This electrical connection increases the number of negatively-charged electrons flowing into our body from the ground when we walk directly on grass, sand, soil, unsealed stone surfaces – even concrete city sidewalks when barefooted – or wearing footwear that is conductive to the earth. Why is this good?  Because of the added healthy benefits that occur with the increase of electrons into the body.

Earthing with pluggz shoesAccording to research studies, one such reported benefit is the reduction of chronic inflammation.  Let us go further. As the scientists explain, when the body suffers from electron deficiency, oxidation occurs.  Oxidation creates positively-charged molecules called free radicals or in other words, damaged cells which can lead to inflammation.  In order to reduce the number of free radicals in the body, we need an increase in the number of negatively-charged electrons. Earthing, or grounding allows us to do this. By earthing or grounding ourselves we are able to increase the number of electrons that flow into our body from the ground up and thereby, decrease the number of free radicals. This helps lower inflammation and creates a positive benefit for our bodies.  Studies also show that other physiological benefits from earthing include a reduction in tension and stress, more energy, more balance and a greater state of over-all overall wellbeing.

So, how can we incorporate the benefits of earthing or grounding into our daily life? For one, we can walk barefoot. By eliminating the barrier from earth to our body, walking barefoot is the best way to experience earthing.  With no barrier, electrons are freely conducted from the ground into our bodies. Great surfaces for earthing or getting grounded, are grass, sand, soil and unsealed tiles/stone, in addition to concrete. Since most of us can’t constantly walk barefoot, and many of us who live in northern climates or in urban areas hardly ever get that chance even on occasion, another way to incorporate earthing into our life is to find shoes that contain grounding technology.  Reality is, however, that most modern shoes today are insulating and keep us from this direct contact with the earth, One company called pluggz now offers footwear embedded with a proprietary technology that is conductive and allows for the flow of free electrons from the earth into the body in every single step and helps ground us. (if this is too sales-y/promotional by mentioning pluggz here just delete our company name). These shoes provide the same benefit as walking barefoot and can be worn anywhere, in any climate and in any geography — from city sidewalks  to the beach.

So what is earthing?  Earthing restores the body’s electrons to a more balanced state thereby increasing healthy benefits to your body and oftentimes to your overall happiness as well.

Happy_lifeEver wonder why we feel so good when walk barefoot on the grass or plant our feet in the sand? Notice that we seem to sleep so well at the beach? This is scientifically proven:  when our bodies make direct contact with the ground, this allows for the flow of the earth’s beneficial and free energy, called electrons, in to our bodies. We soak up the positive, let go of the negative—and our entire well being is affected (in a good way).

That got us thinking even more at pluggz—why do some people always seem calm and happy, no matter what the universe dishes out?

And notice that there seems to be a direct correlation between fulfilling and happy???

YOU can be one of those people, too!  Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Give yourself a little time off, even if it’s just 5 minutes:  Do something you love, whether it gardening, playing or just strolling.
  • Take care of YOU: a hot bath, a massage, a good book—these can all give you “quiet time” where you just focus on you.
  • Don’t gobble your food. This one’s a toughie, since our fast food culture seems to condone us eating on the run.  But enjoy, taste and smell—your digestion will be glad you did—and you’ll end up being a lot calmer and focused.
  • Feeling anxious?  Just breathe!  Calm down by taking a few deep breaths and exhaling.
  • Reach out and re-connect with someone: The Internet makes it easier than ever to find people whom you haven’t seen in years.  Not only does it “complete your story,” but you’ll start to remember some very joyous (and humorous) memories—things you haven’t thought of in years.
  • Practice Gratitude: This seems to be said time and again, but with good reason—it helps us focus on the positive, not the negative.  Even the worst day has a few bright spots, so every night, make a list of at least 3 things for which you are grateful.

“Today, I behold all the abundance that surrounds me” –Deepak Chopra

Grounding, also known as Earthing, has been around for thousands of years; in fact, our ancestors walked barefoot just so they could stay connected to the earth.  Now, it’s getting a lot of attention again by health and wellness experts – and that’s the concept behind the Pluggz shoe.

Simply, the earth is one of the most powerful energy sources.  When our bodies make direct contact with the ground, we absorb the earth’s beneficial and natural energy, called electrons, allowing us to absorb the positive and let go of the negative.  Our entire physiology is affected and we become calmer, more peaceful, happier, and healthier.

According to some, their most powerful inner work is done just laying on a big rock in the sun, completely alone, being contemplative and receiving guidance—and when you stay away from nature for too long you cease to hear that voice.

“A few years ago I got the flu and as I lay in bed, I could hear that one of the reasons I got sick is that I need to adjust my work-life balance even more, that I am not getting out in nature enough, that I need to do it nearly every day,” says Business and Executive Coach Nina Cherry who takes women on nature retreats  “I need to balance what I receive from nature with the immense amount of energy that I put out to my clients, my grown children, and my community–as many professional women do.”

As a result, she loves to hike by herself to get into communion with Nature and Spirit—at power spots like the top of the 10,000 ft. dormant volcano on Maui, “ but you don’t have to go to such an exotic place, just remember how healing the earth can be.”

Nina also conducts retreats in Maui to help women reconnect with nature, empower themselves–and do deep transformative work, many times resulting in their making important lifestyle changes for their continued health and well-being.

Ever wonder why so many seem to sleep better at the beach? Nope, it’s not the sound of the waves, but it’s really because both sand and ocean water are natural conductive materials that will help you get rid of positive electrons and negative energy.

The science of Grounding, also known as Earthing, has been around since the beginning of time, but it’s only recently been brought to the forefront by natural health and wellness advocates.

The reasoning is that the Earth is a powerful energy source. When we walk barefoot, we absorb this energy in to our bodies in the form of free electrons. This is Grounding, also called Earthing, and it affects our physiology by helping us release the negative and embrace the positive. Studies show the following:

Grounding helps us sleep and sleep enhances our well being.

Studies show the following:

Experts recommend at least 7.5 hours of shut-eye a night; with sleep deprivation, here’s what they say may happen:

  • We can become sick,  stressed, anxious, irritable and depressed
  • We might gain weight. This  is because sleep has a direct effect on three hormones that regulate  stress, energy balance and appetite: ghrelin, which increases appetite, becomes elevated; leptin, which suppresses appetite and moderates energy balance, is decreased; cortisol, the stress hormone that elevates glucose and appetite, is increased
  • Since sleep deprivation can lead to stress and a lack of coping mechanisms, our bodies  can become flooded with those “fight or flight” hormones, adrenalin and  cortisol—and that can blow out our adrenals.
  • We’ll become more  prone to injury
  • We’ll be more susceptible to illness. In  fact, a couple of years ago the Archives of Internal Medicine gave  153 people the rhino virus (common cold) by nose drop.  It was found that  those studied who got at least seven hours of sleep per night were 300 percent (three times) less likely to catch a cold.
  • We’ll lower our immune system:  Melatonin is produced during dark hours and that’s what controls our  immune system. Therefore, longer days and shorter nights can lead to depressed immunity and increased risk of infections—with elevations in insulin, stress hormones, and blood pressure.

So, how do we get grounded, sleep better and get healthier in the process?

The best way is to go barefoot on the ground for 20 or 30 minutes a day, like our ancestors did. But we all know that is not practical in this day and age (at least for most of us). The next best thing is to wear shoes that are grounding.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to sacrifice fashion for comfort in a shoe?  And what if we also threw in an added health benefit of grounding?

Who says women can’t have it all?

Pluggz: where health meets style.  We like to call it ‘The Trifecta.’

It was important for our CEO, Sharon Whiteley,to develop a shoe that not only had the health benefit of grounding but also looked stylish and was comfortable.

Health:  Pluggz incorporate an exclusive technology that reconnects people with the natural energy source of the earth.  Each pair of shoes contains black plugs made from a custom formulated carbon and rubber compound that sit under a weight bearing part of our feet ensuring electrical contact between the earth and our bodies. This proprietary plug feature allows people to get grounded when walking on grass, sand, soil — even concrete city sidewalks. Being grounded is scientifically proven to be beneficial to one’s overall well-being. You can read more here.

Fashion/Comfort: Pluggz not only offers extreme comfort, they also are super stylish, with a collection of Ballet flats -from sophisticated metallics and suede loafers.

Are you feeling anxious or tired lately? Life often moves quicker than we can keep up with and it is challenging to get grounded and bring ourselves back into the present moment.

Here are 5 ways to feel grounded again:

Pluggz Grounding Shoes Yoga and Grounding

1.  Walk on the Ground Outside. Many of us spend our time inside (especially during winter.)  Make an effort to walk barefoot outside or wear pluggz grounding shoes so when you are outside you are still able to connect with the Earth’s energy.  This will help you feel connected to the earth and it’s many natural healing powers.

2. Stop and Observe. There is no argument that our mind and body are connected.  Tune into your body at different times throughout the day and simply take notice of what is going on inside, without judgment or trying to “find” a way to change your current state of being.  Just notice your thoughts and feelings and accept them for what they are.

3.  Take a Few Deep Breaths and Visualize. After you notice that perhaps your mind is racing or you feel anxious, simply take a couple of deep breaths, filling and emptying your lungs completely.  Close your eyes if that feels good.

4.  Practice Yoga. The act of practicing yoga allows us to become more grounded.  Try a few sun salutations that connect us to the sky, then fold in half and place your hands on the floor, imagining yourself connected to the Earth.  Visualize these opposites as you close your eyes and practice.  Through yoga asanas, or poses, we instantly become connected to the Earth.  You don’t need to necessarily practice for an hour to feel these effects; try it for 5 minutes and see if you don’t feel more grounded.

5.  Write Affirmations. The daily practice of writing affirmations, especially in the morning, imprints into our subconscious what we want to manifest into our life.  For example, I write daily affirmations as I drink my cappuccino each morning to the point where it’s part of my daily routine.  Usually I write somewhere between 10 – 20 positive “I” statements for the day, and one of the mainstays is “I am grounded.”  By writing this positive thought daily into my journal, I find during the remainder of the day I am more grounded than when I don’t write my affirmations.

The benefits of feeling grounded are enormous.  I find that I tend to feel calmer and more centered, act in a proactive and not a reactive fashion throughout my day, and generally have an overall sense of well-being.  Life inevitably throws curve balls our way that will throw us off-balance, but if we can be self-aware enough to remember to stop, notice, take a few deep breaths, and feel our feet on the ground – in just 30 seconds it is possible to feel more grounded and at peace about what is.

Feeling lethargic? Here’s why:

With the advancements in technology and medicine in the last 150 years, you would think everyone would be living a better and healthier life. But instead we seem to be getting more anxious and less happy. As buildings get taller, computers take over human jobs, and e-mail and texting become our means of communication, we are steadily disconnecting from our original energy source – the Earth.

We have lost our sense of grounding – of connecting ourselves with the energy the earth naturally omits.  Many of us feel this disconnect – like something is ‘off’ or we are constantly feeling sick or tired.  Instead of looking for a solution, we medicate, operate, look for a quick fix.

What is the missing link? Is there a ‘cure all’ for sicknesses and health-

Green juices? Cleansing? Acai? Chia seeds? Yoga?

Could is be that what we are lacking is simply the connection to the Earth?

The science of grounding or earthing has been around since the beginning of time, but has recently been brought to the forefront of the natural health dialogue by pioneers, Clint Ober and James L. Oschman, Ph.D. They base their findings around the notion that our Earth is an electric field, and stored inside is a potent, natural energy source, called electrons.  You probably remember this word from 9th grade science class – electrons are matter and energy.  But how does that relate to this conversation? Well, when we walk directly on the ground – barefoot on the grass, on a sandy beach for instance, or even on concrete sidewalks, our bodies actually absorb the earth’s natural electrical charge that the ground emits.

This energy transference affects every aspect of human physiology.  It is reported to promote tranquility, reduce stress and foster a sense of peace, relaxation and overall well being — a must in today’s hectic world. Getting stuck in traffic, being frustrated at work, or just flat out having a bad day — whatever the reason, carries negative energy.  Grounding, also known as earthing, helps you release the negative, and embrace positive energy.

If walking everywhere barefoot, as our ancestors did, is not a possibility for you – and it’s not for most of us in this day and age, we have invented a shoe that does the grounding work for you – They are called pluggz.  Most shoes are made with impenetrable soles which stop the natural conduction of energy.  Pluggz are designed with a custom formulated rubber and carbon ‘plug’ embedded into the insole, at the weight bearing part of your foot. Carbon is a natural conductor, so the earth’s energy is easily absorbed through your feet and transmitted throughout your body. With pluggz you can walk on grass, sand, gravel, unsealed stones/tiles and even concrete sidewalks and still receive the natural transference of the earth’s energy.

Most users report a noticeable difference in just one day of wearing them!

Plugzz is a triple threat – they’re stylish, comfortable and good for your health/body – all in one shoe.

  Grounding: The Natural Remedy

ground into heart health

Ground Yourself into Heart Health

High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because many people with this condition are not even aware of the fact that they have it, or are even at risk. In numerous instances there are no outward visible or internal physical signs that one has high blood pressure. It’s not just high strung people either, as many seem to think. Many of those at risk pass away without being diagnosed. This disease does not discriminate, as people of all fitness levels suffer its effects.

High blood pressure is a very serious health concern and the statistics speak volumes. According to the American Heart Association, the data on high blood pressure is as follows:

•    High blood pressure, often referred to as “hypertension” killed 46,765 Americans in 200 and was further listed as a primary or contributing cause of death in about 251,000 U.S.

•    One in five Americans, with one in four being an adult, has high blood pressure. Thirty percent did not know they had it. Often no obvious outward signs exist.

Many doctors prescribe drugs for high blood pressure and sometimes, these can be effective. Treatment, however, can have unpleasant and even harmful side effects. Doctors as well as many medical professionals have stated that sometimes the treatment can be worse than the disease.

What YOU Can do to Take Charge

For starters, the first recommended step is to get checked out by a medical professional. Even your local pharmacy provides a way to get your blood pressure checked. If you discover that you do have high blood pressure, this information can be life-saving. There are other measures you can take to help normalize your blood pressure. Altering your lifestyles and adhering to better nutritional or diet protocols on the advice of your health care provider is certainly a good first step. According to many scientifically substantiated studies, there is a more natural way to cure high-blood pressure; grounding.

Grounding, also called earthing, is what happens when people make direct contact with the earth – be if grass, sand, soil, gravel, unsealed tiles, stone – even concrete city sidewalks. It’s pretty simple. The earth has an abundance of natural and healthful energy stored in it the form of electrons. In the beginning of civilization people walked barefoot a great deal of the time, or wore leather soled foot covers which allowed for the free flow of electrons into our bodies. Scientific studies have documented this restoration into our electron-deficient bodies helps contribute to our returning to a more normalized healthy body state on many levels. This includes blood pressure.

Almost as Good as Going Barefoot

Although ideal, it’s not practical to continuously go barefoot in this day and age. The next alternative is not practical either as many of us do not wear fully leather skinned foot covers. Even if we do splurge on leather soled shoes, most have synthetic glue used in their construction so they are not conductive to the earth’s energy in any event.

The earthing and grounding re-discovery is increasingly growing in presence, and given American ingenuity, innovative products are coming to market that enable the transfer of the earth’s electrons back into our bodies. One way to naturally restore this connection is through your feet.

Pluggz was the first company to create the “original” earthing shoe, or grounding shoe. Not only do all pluggz shoes have a proprietary conductive, grounding technology designed in to the sole of their shoes in the most optimal metatarsal area, they also offer a lot more. Pluggz women’s ballet flats and women’s flip flops are stylish and look great (or women wouldn’t wear them). They are extremely well engineered and very comfortable (or women wouldn’t wear them for very long). More importantly, they help enable grounding which is beneficial for your body. All of this is offered in a single shoe.

By just by wearing earthing shoes or grounding shoes you are actually contributing to normalizing blood pressure. Who would have thought? For scientifically based studies on the topic of grounding go to www.earthinginstitue.com.
