Grounding or earthing is all about taking little steps that can make a big difference in your life no matter where you live, work or play. The earth’s gifts abound everywhere, buoying spirits and benefitting bodies by nature’s sheer presence alone. In the past few decades a number of well-researched books by doctors and scientists have made the connection between nature and human health. Recently published new ones are springing up on the shelves at a fast clip. Included in many are the positive effects that just looking at nature can have on depression, immunity, vitality, productivity, creativity, memory and even cognitive functions.

In their book, Your Brain on Nature: The Science of Nature’s Influence on Your Health, Happiness and Vitality Eve Selhub, MD and Alan Logan MD relays that spending just 20 minutes in a vegetation-rich area of nature improves emotional strength, perspective and vitality. A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that people who lived within a half mile of a green space experienced less anxiety and depression than those living farther away. That’s sure sounds like an appealing alternative to taking medications — at least worth a try. And it’s free.

Then there are two studies by Roger Ulrich of the University of Delaware worth citing. His findings reveal that just viewing nature can encourage healing and lowers the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood by 13 percent. A must read are Richard Louv’s works. He expounds on the topic and coined “Nature Deficiency Syndrome.” This phrase says it all.

The healing effects of a natural view are also increasingly being understood in stressful environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, and military sites as well as for people who work in windowless offices – that’s lots of us. Studies reveal that nature is an effective means of relieving stress and improving overall wellbeing. The Japanese call the grounding effect of looking at trees shinrin-yoku, which means “forest bathing”. They actually prescribe this for patients as part of medical care.

Newly published books, including Deepak Chopra and Kimberly Snyder’s book Radical Beauty makes the connection between nature and being grounded as one of their six core pillars and The Nature Fix, by Florence Williams, just now hitting bookstores, shares rich data and findings supporting the outstanding wellness benefits of the outdoors.

It goes without saying that living in the suburbs, near a park or close to the water offers endless opportunities to restore yourself. But even if home is in a concrete jungle or you can’t get outdoors easily from your high-rise office perches in the city, there are steps you can take to get grounded and partake in nature. One of the best things about grounding is that it is accessible almost anywhere, at any place and at any time. Sounds like early tree huggers knew a thing or two!

We first published this blog post in early 2013 but we think it bares repeating. Earthing or grounding as it is commonly known is starting to come to into its own. More and more people are learning about the theraputic effects of grounding or earthing.

According to James Oschman PhD., a recognized expert in the area of energy medicine and its scientific basis, “People have known for a long time that walking barefoot feels good.” We all can attest to that. But walking around barefoot not only feels good it has the added bonus of being beneficial for our bodies, too! How, you ask? Well, because of earthing, also called grounding! But what is earthing. In the simplest of terms, earthing means grounding your body to the Earth.  So what does this mean?

Although the concept of earthing has been around since the ‘60s, earthing is still viewed as a relatively new health discovery according to Clint Ober, a pioneer in the field who coined the term.  Earthing or grounding, creates an electrical connection from the earth to the human body when a person makes direct contact with the ground. This electrical connection increases the number of negatively-charged electrons flowing into our body from the ground when we walk directly on grass, sand, soil, unsealed stone surfaces – even concrete city sidewalks when barefooted – or wearing footwear that is conductive to the earth. Why is this good?  Because of the added healthy benefits that occur with the increase of electrons into the body.

As the scientists explain, when the body suffers from electron deficiency, oxidation occurs.  Oxidation creates positively-charged molecules called free radicals or in other words, damaged cells which can lead to inflammation.  In order to reduce the number of free radicals in the body, we need an increase in the number of negatively-charged electrons. Earthing, or grounding allows us to do this. By earthing or grounding ourselves we are able to increase the number of electrons that flow into our body from the ground up and thereby, decrease the number of free radicals. This helps lower inflammation and creates a positive benefit for our bodies.  Studies also show that other physiological benefits from earthing include a reduction in tension and stress, more energy, more balance and a greater state of over-all overall wellbeing.

So, how can we incorporate the benefits of earthing or grounding into our daily life? For one, we can walk barefoot. By eliminating the barrier from earth to our body, walking barefoot is the best way to experience earthing.  With no barrier, electrons are freely conducted from the ground into our bodies. Great surfaces for earthing or getting grounded, are grass, sand, soil and unsealed tiles/stone, in addition to concrete. February is American Heart Month and despite some big strides, heart attack remains the number 1 killer of women. That means more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.

According to the National Institutes of Health, one of the ways that grounding is good for the heart is that it makes the blood thin.  When you walk barefoot, or otherwise connect to the earth, you soak up electrons.  The earth is negatively charged and we’re constantly bombarded with free radicals (rogue cells, the equivalent of “human rust”).  When blood is sludgy, it’s full of toxins, and that is one of the biggest causes of heart attack and stroke.

Another way grounding, or earthing, aids heart health, says Cardiologist, Nutritionist, Anti-Aging Specialist and Bioenergetics Psychologist, Dr. Stephen Sinatra on his website, is that it shifts our sympathetic nervous system—and that, in turn, gives us the feeling of calmness and overall wellness that’s so beneficial to health, including cardiac!

We know how much disease is connected to chronic inflammation and research has been pointing, with increasing frequency, toward the connection between chronic inflammation and heart disease. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely about the body, as nature intended; however, with inflammation, it becomes “stuck,” hence, causing heart attacks.

It’s often said that savasana —corpse, or final resting pose—is the most difficult yoga pose to master. That’s the time when we let go of our breathing, set our mind free and absorb all the goodness of the poses. Both our energy and vibration rises. We take action, have confidence and determination.

Deepak Chopra explains that, although many think the purpose of meditation is to tune OUT, the real purpose is actually to tune IN—to find that inner peace, to find the space between the thoughts.

  1.  We experience mindfulness.  Most of the time we get so caught up in our busy lives that we neglect to pay attention to just what makes us happy or unhappy.  We forget to be grateful of any good things that happen to us.  We tend to ignore challenge and problems, rather than thinking them through to a solution.
  2. Improved mental clarity.  Empty the clutter and chatter, clear the overwhelm and you can set your intentions and explore your goals.
  3. Better Health.  Time after time, studies have shown that meditation can reduce stress and decrease anxiety—which aids sleep, one of the building blocks of health; in fact, chronic sleep deprivation leads to lower immunity, lack of focus, injury—and a host of challenges.
  4. Little things don’t bother you as much. When you’re stressed, little things seem like big things—and big things seem almost insurmountable. Since meditation helps us find that inner peace, we’re much more able detach and focus on the present, rather than the past or future.

  • Don’t gobble your food. This one’s a toughie, since our fast food culture seems to condone us eating on the run.  But enjoy, taste and smell—your digestion will be glad you did—and you’ll end up being a lot calmer and focused.
  • Feeling anxious?  Just breathe!  Calm down by taking a few deep breaths and exhaling.
  • Reach out and re-connect with someone: The Internet makes it easier than ever to find people whom you haven’t seen in years.  Not only does it “complete your story,” but you’ll start to remember some very joyous (and humorous) memories—things you haven’t thought of in years.
  • Practice Gratitude: This seems to be said time and again, but with good reason—it helps us focus on the positive, not the negative.  Even the worst day has a few bright spots, so every night, make a list of at least 3 things for which you are grateful.

Ever wonder why so many seem to sleep better at the beach? Nope, it’s not the sound of the waves, but it’s really because both sand and ocean water are natural conductive materials that will help you get rid of positive electrons and negative energy.

The science of Grounding, also known as Earthing, has been around since the beginning of time, but it’s only recently been brought to the forefront by natural health and wellness advocates.

This  is because sleep has a direct effect on three hormones that regulate  stress, energy balance and appetite: ghrelin, which increases appetite, becomes elevated; leptin, which suppresses appetite and moderates energy balance, is decreased; cortisol, the stress hormone that elevates glucose and appetite, is increased
  • Since sleep deprivation can lead to stress and a lack of coping mechanisms, our bodies  can become flooded with those “fight or flight” hormones, adrenalin and  cortisol—and that can blow out our adrenals.
  • We’ll become more  prone to injury
  • We’ll be more susceptible to illness. In  fact, a couple of years ago the Archives of Internal Medicine gave  153 people the rhino virus (common cold) by nose drop.  It was found that  those studied who got at least seven hours of sleep per night were 300 percent (three times) less likely to catch a cold.
  • We’ll lower our immune system:  Melatonin is produced during dark hours and that’s what controls our  immune system. Therefore, longer days and shorter nights can lead to depressed immunity and increased risk of infections—with elevations in insulin, stress hormones, and blood pressure.

So, how do we get grounded, sleep better and get healthier in the process?

The best way is to go barefoot on the ground for 20 or 30 minutes a day, like our ancestors did. But we all know that is not practical in this day and age (at least for most of us). The next best thing is to wear shoes that are grounding.
