We know, we know!  We write about sleep a lot.  That’s because it’s so important!

We all know it’s recommended that we all get between 7.0 and 8.0 hours of shut-eye at night. We all know that without adequate sleep, we’re more prone to injury, experience lack of focus and moodiness. We might even gain weight, since sleep is associated with several hormones directly related to appetite and energy.  Come on—we all do it—we’ll go for anything within easy that offers the body energy—seriously, are you really going to feel like making a healthy meal when you’re so tired?

But we also know it’s easier said than done. A lot can stand in our way—racing minds, worry, sirens, noisy neighbors—you name it.  But here are some simple things that may help you.

  • Don’t minimize the importance of a good mattress and box spring. We do spend about 1/3 of our lives in bed, so a good mattress is a vital.  So is the box spring, Even though we can’t see it, it has a big job, absorbing shocks and stress.
  • Don’t drink water right before bed, or you’ll be up all night running to the bathroom.
  • Incorporate some self care techniques, such meditation, soothing music, a relaxing hot bath; reading, doing some gentle stretching, etc.  Do NOT use the bedroom to watch television, eat or do any other non-sleep activities.
  • Invest in one of those “white noise boxes.”  They do exactly what it says—create white noise.
  • Play some soothing tapes, such as those with sounds of tweeting birds, rushing water, etc.
  • Turn off those electronics, like cell phones, beeping computers, radios, etc.
  • Write a “Nite Nite” paper–jot down every single thing that has you worried, annoyed or distracted in some way.  Then throw out the paper! The idea is you’ve just cleared your mind to make room for a peaceful sleep.

Sometimes it’s hard to sleep; in fact, the Centers for Disease Control estimated as recently as 2011 that over 70 million people suffered from sleep disorders.

We’re constantly assaulted by sirens and other street noises and noisy neighbors.

Now, get ready—we’re going into the holidays, so here comes the “monkey brain”—you know, that chatter that that keeps us tossing and turning and worrying about future tasks and deadlines.

Health experts advise us to get at least 7.5 hours of sleep at night. Some people do require more—but there’s no such thing as requiring less sleep. When we sleep, cells replenish and recover.  Without it, all of our body systems suffer. We become more injury-prone, and we hardly make good food choices when we’re tired, often reaching for those high-fat and sugary comfort foods.

Here are a few simple tips to help you get those ZZZs:

  1.  Be sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive.  We spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping so it’s a vital piece of furniture.  And don’t ignore the box spring; a good box spring absorbs shocks and stress.
  2.  Don’t drink water for 2 or 3 hours before bed, or you’ll be up all night. Same with exercise; everyone should incorporate some physical activity into their day, but if it’s just before bed, you might find yourself too alert and energetic to sleep!
  3. Learn meditation or some other relaxation techniques. There was a funny scene in the movie “Eat Pray Love” where Julia Roberts tries to meditate, looks at the clock and sees that only a minute has gone by—at which point she opens her eyes and says “Kill me now!” The more she did, though, the more she could do. Don’t get discouraged. It’s a process.
  4.  Establish little routines for getting ready for bed: Soothing music, a relaxing hot bath; reading; or taking a leisurely walk can calm and get you ready for slumber. Find what works for you.
