Most of us love that yummy feeling of swishing our bare feet on grass or in sand on the beach. There’s a reason. It’s physiological. The ground has natural energy stored inside called electrons which our bodies need – some crave. When our feet make direct contact with the ground these electrons flow into our body. It’s called grounding — also known as earthing.
Direct contact with the earth is the most direct and natural way to get grounded for sure. Other means are wearing shoes that are what’s called conductive that enable the flow of this energy into the body. And there are conductive products you can plug into inside as well through a simple grounding cord.
When outside in your bare feet watch out for the pitfalls and perils.  Having a clean patch of ground or perfectly manicured beach to walk on is key. And you don’t need to walk either. Just bare feet to the ground so you can see what’s underfoot is all it takes.
Regarding the perils there are many that lurk in public places. These include dog, town and city parks as well as beaches, lake sides and athletic fields. They all can be strewn with harmful and often not visible culprits.  For instance — dog pee and poop or just  residue; beverage can tops, broken bottle pieces, pigeon droppings and even more unsavory items such as condoms and even syringes. In addition to many puncturing your feet and creating a beeline for bacteria to seep into your body, germs and fungi invisible on the surface can have a hey day getting into your system just by coming in contact with your bare skin. Our skin is our largest organ of transfer into our bodies, more so than what we put in our mouths.
So beware the seduction of beckoning nature and its lure. Just watch where you walk when barefoot.

The ancients knew and now we, too, are fast becoming well informed about the amazing wellness benefits of getting grounded. Also known as earthing, grounding is the term used when our bodies get in sync with the earth’s natural energies through the flow of stored electrons back in to our bodies. Some of us who thought grounding just referred to taking away privileges from teenagers who blew curfews or pushed our buttons way beyond our patience warranting a tad bit of discipline, grounding in the wellness context has an entirely different and positive meaning. And, it most assuredly would also be beneficial for those who did have to endure that “time out”.

If you studied Earth Science in school, chances are you can recall a few basic facts about the Earth’s surface that you probably haven’t thought about in years, let alone applied to your own health. You may remember that the Earth’s surface is electrically charged but you may not realize that every time you walk on it, you are coming in contact with a constant flow of electrons that your body needs to be in balance and function properly.

Our ancestors naturally took advantage of this earthly healing resource by staying in close constant contact with nature for thousands of years. That is until progress and its attendant modern-day technologies and cultural mores stepped in. Native American Indians first felt the unnatural effects and resultant debilitating diseases of “progress” when they shed their outdoor lifestyles, leather-soled moccasins included, for a sedentary existence indoors. Other cultures followed suit in dress and daily life, transitioning from farms and countrified towns to man-made urban environments and cityscapes at the turn of the 20th century.

More and more, mainstream wellness advocates and everyday consumers who just like to follow trends are singing the praises about the benefits of getting grounded.  Deepka Chopra just posted an informing article along with his new co-authored book with Kimberly Snyder, Radical Beauty lists “grounding” as one of the six pillars of beauty.  Dave Asprey of Biohacked and The Bulletproof Diet fame is including grounding in his soon to be released book Head Strong. With all the global changes afoot – over the air waves – and in the news, it sure is a time to get grounded! Extensive research explains why this is a good thing. The Earth is a natural source of electrons and subtle electrical fields – energy that all living things use to thrive.  We know that life itself, when you boil it down, is a flow of electrons. Electrons are essential for the proper functioning of the immune, circulatory and nervous systems, and are also needed for the synchronization of biorhythms and other physiological processes that allow humans to live healthful lives.  Similarly, our bodies are electrical systems. Throughout our evolutionary history, our internal electrical homeostasis has been maintained and regulated by direct bodily contact with the Earth.

Your immune system also functions optimally when your body has an adequate supply of the Earth’s natural energy. When you touch the ground without interference, your body naturally absorbs its electrons. While any body part will do, you’ll get the bigger boost through the soles of your feet.  With more than seven thousand nerve endings in each foot, it’s no surprise that walking in conductive shoes is the best way to recharge your health, effortlessly. Even a quick walk at lunch time in a near by park, or a little patch of grass will do wonders if that is all that time permits.

Grounding or earthing is all about taking little steps that can make a big difference in your life no matter where you live, work or play. The earth’s gifts abound everywhere, buoying spirits and benefitting bodies by nature’s sheer presence alone. In the past few decades a number of well-researched books by doctors and scientists have made the connection between nature and human health. Recently published new ones are springing up on the shelves at a fast clip. Included in many are the positive effects that just looking at nature can have on depression, immunity, vitality, productivity, creativity, memory and even cognitive functions.

In their book, Your Brain on Nature: The Science of Nature’s Influence on Your Health, Happiness and Vitality Eve Selhub, MD and Alan Logan MD relays that spending just 20 minutes in a vegetation-rich area of nature improves emotional strength, perspective and vitality. A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that people who lived within a half mile of a green space experienced less anxiety and depression than those living farther away. That’s sure sounds like an appealing alternative to taking medications — at least worth a try. And it’s free.

Then there are two studies by Roger Ulrich of the University of Delaware worth citing. His findings reveal that just viewing nature can encourage healing and lowers the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood by 13 percent. A must read are Richard Louv’s works. He expounds on the topic and coined “Nature Deficiency Syndrome.” This phrase says it all.

The healing effects of a natural view are also increasingly being understood in stressful environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, and military sites as well as for people who work in windowless offices – that’s lots of us. Studies reveal that nature is an effective means of relieving stress and improving overall wellbeing. The Japanese call the grounding effect of looking at trees shinrin-yoku, which means “forest bathing”. They actually prescribe this for patients as part of medical care.

Newly published books, including Deepak Chopra and Kimberly Snyder’s book Radical Beauty makes the connection between nature and being grounded as one of their six core pillars and The Nature Fix, by Florence Williams, just now hitting bookstores, shares rich data and findings supporting the outstanding wellness benefits of the outdoors.

It goes without saying that living in the suburbs, near a park or close to the water offers endless opportunities to restore yourself. But even if home is in a concrete jungle or you can’t get outdoors easily from your high-rise office perches in the city, there are steps you can take to get grounded and partake in nature. One of the best things about grounding is that it is accessible almost anywhere, at any place and at any time. Sounds like early tree huggers knew a thing or two!

You often leave these situations sick, tired, hoarse, overwhelmed, giddy, and just feeling a bit all over the place. Your feet often hurt, your digestion system out of whack, and even though you may be buzzing with new ideas, your whole body and mind are often just plain tired.

Here’s how to get through every conference taking with you the positive, but leaving behind the draining feeling, the sore feet, and (hopefully) the post-conference colds!

medition1Anyone remember that scene from the movie “Eat Pray Love” where Julia Roberts travels to India and, during her first time meditating, she looks up at the clock, sees it only moved a few minutes, and opens her eyes to mutter “Kill me now.”

Well, sometimes it’s like that for us.  We get some of our best thoughts when our minds are quiet enough for us to listen (that’s why ideas often come to us when we’re brushing our teeth, showering or even dreaming), but sometimes this life just overwhelms us, what with bills, looming deadlines, sirens, noisy neighbors and more.

So how do you quiet your mind when you just can’t sit still?  Here are some tips:

1.  First, don’t try to force it.  That only creates stress.  Compare meditation and forcing the quiet mind to this example that we’ve probably all experienced:  You need to get up early, but have insomnia.  You keep looking at the clock and say “if I fall asleep now, I’ll get 4 hours of sleep…if I fall asleep now, I’ll get 3 hours of sleep…and so on.”  Doesn’t work, does it?  Rather, take a walk, daydream, do some yoga, read–and THEN go back to it.

Plus, it’s a major misconception that meditation means having an empty mind.  It doesn’t–but what it means is that meditation is really about keeping your mind active, with only the things on which you want to focus.

2.  Breathe.  Try some relaxation breathing techniques. Breathing is one of the best ways to calm the mind, relax and reduce anxiety; in fact, when we’re stressed and anxious, we tend to have shallow breathing.  One of the best breathing techniques is from Dr. Andrew Weil and is called the 4-7-8 breath.  For instructions, click here.

3.  Practice Gratitude.  We know, we know, you’re probably saying “Been there, done that.”  But here’s the point:  You just don’t want to focus on the difficulties of your day, and even the worst one has at least one or two good things about it.  Focus on the positive. And get specific “I appreciate so-and-so because…”

4.  Write it down.  Some people refer to it as “Evening Papers” or “Morning Papers.”  The idea is that they write down every single thing that has them worried, concerned or anxious–then they throw out the paper to make room in the mind for the positive.  You might want to develop your own scheduled “papers,” to coincide with your mediation.

5.  Connect with Nature.  This circles back to our earlier comment about taking a walk.  Or maybe just sit in a park or outdoor area–barefoot, and with your feet on the ground. Try to do it barefoot, so you connect with the Earth, which is one of the most powerful energy sources.  When you connect, you absorb all the Earth’s positive electrons–and that puts you in balance, gives you an overall sense of well-being and helps you stay grounded.  We call it “Vitamin EL.”

Editor’s Note: Our 4-legged furry friends do so much for our health, so we must do everything we can to keep them fit, healthy and grounded.

Animals now have many similar ailments as humans, such as obesity (according to the Association for Pet Obesity, an estimated 54% of dogs and cats were classified by their veterinarians as obese in 2014), high blood pressure, diabetes, insomnia, anxiety and more.

Colleen Demling offers some expert tips for keeping your furry friend healthy.  Guess what—some ideas you’ll even be able to do together!

As a dog owner, the owner of a dog training company,  and someone who is very focused on health and fitness, I know that the cost of taking care of your fury friend can be high, but much of that is often for emergency care.

I also know that research is constantly revealing ways animals can boost immunity, lower blood pressure, ease stress, and more for humans.

Just as with humans, focus on wellness and prevention. Here are some tips for keeping your furry friend (and maybe you, too) healthy and fit.

  • Talk To Your Veterinarian

While most dogs need 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, just like us, no one form of workout is right for every dog so talk to your veterinarian before starting their exercise regimen. Make sure your vet educates you on the signs of exhaustion or overheating. If your pooch pants excessively or hyperventilates, if his tongue and gums turn brick red, or if he can’t keep up and stands or lies listlessly, stop exercising and seek immediate veterinary care. These may be signs of a heat stroke, which is potentially fatal.

  • Doggie Paddle With Your Pooch

Not only is swimming fun and a great work out for both of you, its great for dogs with arthritis as well as dogs with short noses that are not efficient for breathing. Taking a dip in the cool water can help overcome heat exhaustion that’s caused by exertion.

  • Interval Walking and Jogging

Dog owners walk an average of 300 minutes per week, whereas people without dogs walk about 168 minutes. Take longer walks a day and if your dog is healthy enough, try adding a few sprints in between to boost their metabolism as well yours.

  • Playing Fetch For Your Abs

Tone your tummy while your dog sprints for his favorite fetch toy. Sit on the floor and, as you hold the toy in your hand. come up for a crunch and pretend to throw. Alternate between throwing and faking it and you’ll get a good abdominal workout while your pup works its cardio.

  • Obstacle Course

Creating an obstacle course is great agility and circuit training for both you and your companion. For yourself, set up specific stations like jump rope, hula-hoop, kettle bells, etc. For your dog, set up stations like hurdles, mazes, and sprints.  There are several companies that even specialize in working out with your dog including www.leashyourfitenss.com and www.k9fitclub.com.

  • Puzzles

Just like us, it’s as important to keep mind agile as it is the body. Train your dog to think by teaching them to hunt or play hide and seek with their favorite toys or treats.

  • Nutrition

As hard as it may be to resist those big puppy eyes when they beg, it’s imperative to not feed your dog human food as it can take years off their life. Small, low-activity dogs need only about 185 to 370 calories daily, while a large pooch between 67 to 88 pounds may need between 1,000 to 2,000 calories, depending on activity level and gender. Yet many of our dogs get far more food than they need. More than one-third of U.S. dogs over 1 year old are overweight.  Consult with your veterinarian about your pets diet and what treats are right for them.

Most of us know pumpkin as the iconic, orange symbol of autumn, Halloween and Thanksgiving, but did you know that this fun object is also a super food that soothes body, mind and soul?

How, you ask?

Body: The pumpkin is ultra high in Vitamins C and A, beta-carotene, anti-oxidants and fiber. Most of us know about vitamin C’s cold-prevention properties, but it’s also essential in the production of collagen and, therefore, often found in skin creams to help keep skin tight, bright and wrinkle-free. Vitamin A keeps your eyes healthy. There’s a lot of vitamin A to begin with–just one cup contains more than 200 percent of your RDA—but there’s even more because one of the things beta-carotene does is convert to a form of vitamin A.

Weight loss is aided because fiber keeps us full longer and makes us eat less; immunity is boosted by the beta-carotene; in fact, some studies have shown that it may possibly play a role in preventing some cancers—and, remember, it’s an anti-oxidant and anti-oxidants fight the rogue cells known as free radicals (human rust), those substances known for causing disease and aging!

Mind: Pumpkin seeds are loaded with plant-based phytosterols, which studies reveal might reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol.

They keep your moods on an even keel, too, because those seeds are rich in tryptophan, an amino acid, which helps produce serotonin, so essential in mood health.

Soul: Come on, does this really need explanation?

We tend to get even closer to nature in the autumn, what with our jumping, playing and taking leaves. We enjoy those bright gorgeous colors of the beautiful foliage and crisp, blue autumn skies. Halloween brings out our inner child and Thanksgiving is the time when ALL of us think about things for which to be grateful.

We’ve all heard the comments: “40 is the new 20,” or “50 is the new 30,” but some insist that is not so.

“We are in such a youth-oriented society that we’re in denial,” Annabelle Gurwitch, comedienne and author, I See You Made an Effort, told Bill Mahar earlier this year.  Mahar is the host of the television show “Real Time.”

As we age, we have different nutritional, exercise, skincare, supplementation needs, and more, she said noting that, “No one who’s 20 or 30 is going to believe it anyway.”

So accept your age, embrace it, live healthfully, and be vibrant and sexy!

As you take your journey, remember:

  • Eat as healthfully as possible! We all know the Hippocratic Oath, “First do no harm”—but Hippocrates also said “Let food be thy medicine.”That said, fill up on fruits and vegetables. Besides vitamins and minerals, you’ll get loads of antioxidants, substances that destroy free radicals, rogue cells that are responsible for disease and aging—just think of a free radical as human rust.
  •  Incorporate physical activity in daily life. Not everyone loves the gym. That’s okay, but the alternative is NOT to do nothing! Incorporate fitness into daily life; we know someone who makes sure she walks at least 1,000 steps per day and always takes stairs rather than the elevator/escalator. Run, hike, swim, play tennis, garden, etc.
  • Get enough sleep. At least 70 million U.S. adults experience sleep disorders, says the Centers for Disease Control.

Chronic sleep deprivation affects all systems: immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular and everyone should aim for 7.5 or 8.0 hours per night/

  • Take care of your skin. Research shows that skin actually ages itself,” Dr. SteveTsoutsouras once said. “All skin contains an enzyme called Arnox that produces free radicals; everyone has it .He noted that the aging process begins in our 20’s; as we age, cells don’t turnover as fast and skin takes longer to heal. When we don’t take care of our skin, by smoking, excessive drinking, or being thoughtless about your skin care products, it speeds up the aging process even more.

It IS pretty easy to misunderstand the concept of feminine power because, for years, it was seen as some kind of weakness, with tears and other outbursts.

It’s really strength, however, that combines inner wisdom, intuition and a need to nurture.

Last year, Gallup revealed in its 2013 State of the American Workplace report that 70 percent of workers are disengaged. Reasons included lack of fulfillment, challenge, and learning/growth.

That doesn’t exactly tap into the feminine power, does it?

Women make great leaders, and that holds true whether they work IN the home, OUT of the home or BOTH.

The Old Girl’s Network: Insider Advice for Women Building Businesses in a Man’s World, by Sharon Whiteley (founder and CEO of pluggz), Kathy Elliott and Connie Duckworth,  was written specifically for the woman building a business—but this wonderful advice can be applied to any environment—and to any gender.
